Scholarly journal negotiations in progress – how will millions be used in the future?

New FinELib website gives a unique possibility to follow the progress of big journal deal negotiations.

Finnish research organisations use millions of euros each year to provide online access to scholarly journals. Journal package deals with publishers have given researchers and students access to a large quantity of scholarly journals. However, excessive price increases are giving trouble to research organisations and especially their libraries and information services. Libraries are often forced to cancel some of their journal subscriptions to keep within their budgets.

Many of these big journal deals are currently under renegotiations, for example with Elsevier, Wiley-Blackwell, and Taylor & Francis. The negotiations are coordinated by FinELib consortium. The goal of these negotiations is to keep expenses at bay, and also to give researcher more possibilities for open access publishing. The main aim is to continue to provide researchers and students access to the scholarly materials they need, as broadly as possible.
