Who can apply for a researcher carrels and how can I apply?
The researcher carrels are open to all researchers in Finland. The criteria for selection include:
- The researcher’s need of the resources of the National Library (especially material restricted to reading room loans)
- The researcher’s current working conditions or lack thereof
- The weekly amount of time the researcher would use the workstation
Applications will be accepted twice a year, in May-June and November-December, via an online application form. The Autumn 2017 application period is 23 Nov – 10 Dec. Successful applicants will be notified by 20 Dec. Researchers are assigned a carrel or a shelf for one term at a time. Occasionally carrels may become available between application periods, in which case interested researchers should direct their inquiries to our customer service (kk-palvelu(at)helsinki.fi), which can also provide additional information on the researcher carrels.
Please note that researcher carrels in the Slavonic Library are granted for shorter periods in the spring and autumn. In the Spring 2018 the period of use will be 1 Jan – 31 May. In the summer, the carrels are available primarily for international researchers and can be reserved by contacting the Slavonic Library at (kk-slav(at)helsinki.fi).
For what kind of work are the different researcher facilities suited?
Researcher carrels in the South Reading Room
The researcher carrels in the South Reading Room (20) are particularly well suited for researchers who need National Library material which is available only for reading room loan. The material will be deposited onto the researcher’s own shelf in the South Reading Room. Material from the Fennica and other special collections cannot be delivered to the South Reading Room. Every recipient of a researcher carrels has approximately two metres of shelf space and a rolling cabinet for storing personal items at their disposal. In addition to the reservable researcher carrels, the South Reading Room has 12 reader desks.
Researches shelves in the North Reading Room
A researcher shelf can fit approximately 80 cm’s worth of reading room loans and personal reading material, which can be stored on the shelf for the duration of the reserved term. The researcher must ensure that any reading room loans are renewed on time. The researcher is also responsible for personal reading material stored on the shelf. Please note that Fennica (National Collection) material is not accessible in the North Reading Room. Fennica material is read in the Special Collections Reading Room.
Researcher carrels at the Slavonic Library
The researcher carrels in the Slavonic Library are intended primarily for researchers using the Slavonic Library’s reading room loans and its open access collection. The research carrels are equipped with lockable drawers and provide researchers with the opportunity to store their reading room loans on their desk and shelves. More information about researcher carrels in the Slavonic Library can be requested via email from kk-slav(at)helsinki.fi.
