Finna

Finna brings together the materials from Finnish archives, libraries and museums.

Service description

Finna brings together the materials from Finnish archives, libraries and museums.

The service provides you with information on available materials and offers a direct access to some of the digitised materials.

In addition to the national view, Finna is a search service entity containing several sites in addition to the nationwide finna.fi site. Organisations can use the Finna platform to create their own search service or online library. The content of organisation-specific sites is usually limited to the material of those individual organisations.

The National Library of Finland is responsible for maintaining the service, which is developed together with partners. The archives, libraries and museums involved in Finna are responsible for its content. The Finna interface and metadata are open. The open interface can be used to search for resources at Finna.fi and to use them in new ways.

The service is funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Finna was created as a part of the National Digital Library project (2008-2017) of the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Background information

The National Library of Finland maintains the Finna service and is responsible for its development and building a cooperation network around it. The customer interface is built on the basis of open source code software VuFind, and Finna is implemented in development rounds in cooperation with archives, libraries and museums. The open source code software also allows for other national and international cooperation in the development of Finna.
