Users satisfied with Finna search services

More than 14,000 users responded to a survey regarding the Finna search service in December. On a scale of one to ten, the respondents gave the service an average score of eight. Eighty-seven per cent of the respondents would recommend the service to others.

Finna is a search service entity comprising the nationwide search service as well as more than 50 digital libraries and other search services built on the Finna platform. At the end of 2016, a total of 188 archives, libraries and museums were included in the service, and the joint view contained more than 12 million entries.

The online survey was displayed on as well as on all other Finna views. A total of 14,250 search service users responded to the survey, which is again more than in previous years: the number of respondents was 12,159 in 2015 and 3,239 in 2014.

The majority of the respondents (71%) used university library views, while the second largest group (17%) used public library views. Six per cent of the respondents used the view. This time, only a very small number of respondents reported using museum and archive views. The survey shows, however, that many respondents use more than one view; for example, 41% of university library search service customers also use the view.

The respondents had learned about the search service at a library, archive or museum service point (52%), in an online or news article (7%), or through social media (2%) or other online sources. More than 7% of the respondents had tried the service at another user’s recommendation.

The availability and comprehensiveness of materials matter

On average, the respondents gave the Finna service they used a score of eight on a scale of one to ten. Of the respondents, 86% were able to find the information or materials they were seeking, and 63% also found other interesting items or information.

What the customers value the most are directly available online materials of a wide variety.As regards the availability of electronic materials, users both lauded the services and expressed needs for development.

Many users feel that the service can be recommended to others: 87% of the respondents reported that they would be more than likely to recommend the service. As the willingness to recommend the service to others was measured on a different scale from last year, direct comparisons cannot be drawn.

Most respondents use Finna at least once a week (40%) or a few times a month (34%). Compared to last year, the number of daily users (6%) has slightly grown.

According to a preliminary analysis of the results, user satisfaction would appear to have improved from last year in all respects.
