The National Library invites applications for the position of National Librarian to lead and develop the unique organisation that is the National Library until further notice.

A successful director has the necessary academic credentials and a robust experience in leadership. He or she must have extensive knowledge of the data and information environment as well as a vision for the future challenges facing memory institutions. The director must be prepared to work actively in international networks. As a leader, the director must be goal-driven and forward-facing.

The director of the National Library works in both a national and an international context, and the successful completion of the associated duties requires:

• Extensive understanding of Finnish and European cultural heritage
• A comprehensive vision of the information sector, its development challenges and the digitalisation of cultural heritage
• Experience of the research world, e.g., in the field of the arts and social sciences
• Experience of demanding leadership duties
• Experience of working both at the national and international levels
• Excellent cooperation and negotiation skills

The position requires a second-cycle academic degree, and a doctoral degree is considered an asset. We also require expertise in the field of the position along with competence in Finnish, Swedish and English. Knowledge of other languages will be considered a further asset.

The position provides a unique opportunity to help support cooperation among Finnish libraries and to influence and decide on the strategic choices that will promote the preservation, accessibility and availability of the Finnish cultural heritage.
