The ambassador of Ukraine to Finland, her excellency Mrs. Olga Dibrova, head librarian Kimmo Tuominen and the deputy director Mrs. Liisa Savolainen met on the 17th April. The occasion of the meeting was set around on the submission of literary works, donated by the Taras Ševtšenkon Literature Institute to the National Library of Finland. During her visit, Mrs. Dibrova got acquainted with the functions of the library and with some of the oldest items written in Ukrainian available in the collections. During the meeting a discussion of possibilities of future cooperation was commenced.

The route of the donation to Finland is interesting, says librarian Irina Lukka, who has been involved with facilitations.

”It happened that the Ukrainian researchers have been working in the Slavonic library of several years. With their help, we got a connection to the Taras Ševtšenko Literature Institute located in Kiev. The staff at the institute offered Slavonic library a collection of valuable reference works, bibliographies, and encyclopedias. Among these are several volumes on poet Taras Ševtšenko, and the diaries of historian Mihajlo Gruševsk”, says Lukka.

”The problem was, how to get these valuable books to Helsinki. A coincidence helped – staff of Ukrainian embassy came for a visit to the Slavonic library, in a private capacity - as a reader. After a minor sorting out, we got the books to Helsinki. A big and heartfelt thanks for this also to Raakel Tasanen who helped with the arrangements”, continues Lukka.

The donation will be placed into the collections of the Slavonic library and will be available to the customers in the week 17.
