Electronic legal deposit collection
The electronic legal deposit collection includes natively digital publications as well as electronic versions of physical publications.
Index
The National Library preserves Finnish electronic books, periodicals and serial publications, maps and sheet music in its electronic legal deposit collection. These materials are requested from online stores and distributors or publishers.
The submission of material and their metadata is primarily arranged with online bookstores, music stores and aggregators which regularly submit all online publications of publishers available through their platform. If necessary, the material may also be deposited by the publisher.
Material to be submitted should primarily be sent in a format compatible with digital preservation. More information on file formats and digital preservation of online materials at the National Library is available on the Digital preservation page.
Submitting electronic legal deposit copies
Publications and their metadata may be deposited to the National Library:
- With an online form at http://luovutuslomake.kansalliskirjasto.fi/
- Large quantities of material can be sent as scheduled mass deposits to the National Library’s server (SFTP)
In addition, the National Library preserves materials and their metadata from publishing systems which have an interface compatible with preservation (e.g., the publication archives of higher education institutions and public administration).
The separate metadata relating to the publications must also be submitted either with the deposit form or as an attachment using a metadata format commonly used in the publishing industry (e.g., Dublin Core, ONIX, DDEX, NewsML, MARC 21).
More instructions on submitting electronic legal deposit copies to the National Library is available from the customer service of the Legal Deposit Office.
