The Picture Collection of the National Collection primarily contains Finnish printed pictures received as legal deposit copies from printing presses.
The Picture Collection of the National Collection primarily contains Finnish printed pictures received as legal deposit copies from printing presses. The majority of the are portraits and landscapes, art reproductions and teaching panels. In addition to single pictures, the collection contains picture portfolios, albums and picture books. In addition, the collection includes smallish sets of original graphics, drawings, watercolours, and photographic proof sheets.
Pictures donated to the collection include at various times also include international materials. Moreover, the collection includes a series of photographs with Russian printing information and captions.
The oldest pictures are from the turn of the 1600s and 1700s. However, the focus of the collection is on the 1800s and early 1900s.
A significant part of the picture materials in the National Library of Finland is included in the old illustrated works in the Special Collections, the Slavonic Library, the Humanities Collection and the National Collection. In addition to the National Collection, everyday graphics can be found, for example, in the ephemera materials of the Humanities Collection Pictures and photographs are also included in many of the private archives of the Manuscript Collection.
