Partners and community relations

The Centre for Preservation and Digitisation in Mikkeli celebrated its 20th anniversary in early September. The anniversary year culminated in the international seminar
With Quality in Mind held at the Mikkeli University
Consortium at the end of the month.

International activities

With a view to achieving its strategic objectives and developing its services, the National Library became increasingly engaged in the activities of international organisations and cooperation forums.  In 2010 particular focus was on international conferences and seminars.

The seminar With Quality in Mind (23 September 2010) was organised in collaboration with the Digitalmikkeli consortium, and the speakers included top-level experts in digitisation and preservation from Finland, Sweden, the UK and Australia.

On 9–11 June the National Library hosted the European Library Automation Group Conference (ELAG), which annually brings together experts in the field from around the world to discuss and exchange experiences about current and future trends
in IT.

On 21–22 October the National Library organised Bibliotheca Baltica, a joint symposium for libraries around the Baltic Sea under the theme Cultural Unity and Diversity of the Baltic Sea Area.

On 28–29 October the National Library partnered with the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence in the Ancient Greek Written Sources in the Eikonopoiia. Digital Imaging of Ancient Textual Heritage: Technological Challenges and Solutions seminar.

Ambassadors and friends of the National Library

Former Speaker of the Parliament Riitta Uosukainen, Professor Emeritus Matti Klinge and the well-known bibliophile Ilkka Paatero continued as “Ambassadors” of the National Library for a second year.

The Friends of the National Library continued with the network’s traditional activities, which included an evening on the literature of the Baltic Sea countries for its membership interested in book history and in the preservation of the printed cultural heritage.

Communications

The National Library’s overall visibility in the media increased slightly not only in comparison with the previous year, but also with the two preceding years. The number of page views on the Library’s website remained almost the same as in the previous year.

The Finnish-language Kansalliskirjasto (National Library) magazine published three issues which were also available in PDF format on the Library’s website. The English-language Bulletin was published online.

Appointments and decorations

In the summer, Director of Library Network Services Kristiina Hormia-Poutanen was appointed Vice-President of the Executive Board of LIBER, the Association of European Research Libraries.

On Finnish Independence Day on 6 December, the President of the Republic awarded the medal of Knight of the Order of the Lion of Finland to Kristiina Hormia-Poutanen and the medal of Knight of the Order of the White Rose of Finland to Director of Administration and Development Dorrit Gustafsson.

In early 2010 the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Helsinki awarded an honorary doctorate to Rainer Knapas, Licentiate of Philosophy, who has served as the project leader of the History of the National Library project since 2008.
