Director’s review

We are witnessing an irreversible digital evolution around us. The Internet is reshaping important civic services, and expectations often run ahead of the services actually on offer. This is a challenge that we must meet.

In recent years, determined efforts have been made to build up the National Digital Library. In 2012 we will see the results of these efforts and enter the era of content.

Electronic contents are a fundamental civil right. Every citizen and community must have access to the contents of 20th century Finnish press and other historical sources.

This national mission will be carried out with respect for copyright and through the creation of new practices. The National Library acting as a partner, the National Digital Library as a supplier and library users as the audience all contribute to this worthwhile vision.

The Internet is a paradise for some and a desolate abomination for others. The National Library’s skilled staff, proud of their profession, see the Internet as a great opportunity which may manifoldly increase the number of our customers.
